Types of Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a learning disability which hinders a persons ability to spell or read.  There are many different types of dyslexia.  Dyslexia is diagnosed by a doctor such as a neuropsychologist, a developmental pediatrician, neurologist or educational psychologist.letter blocks spelling dyslexia  Some symptoms of dyslexia include difficulty learning letters, distinguising word sounds, and confusion reading sentences in the correct order and direction.

Neglect Dyslexia

Neglect dyslexia is a condition where a person neglects to read one side of a word.  This is most common in longer words, or compound words.  For example when reading the word "stairway" the reader may only see "way" or "stair".

Spelling Dyslexia

Spelling Dyslexia is when the reader has problems reading all types of words.  At times, as person with spelling dyslexia, may not be able to identify certain letters.  Those with spelling dyslexia read very slow, and will read each letter at a time.

Semantic Dyslexia

Semantic Dyslexia is when a person has trouble understanding a word because they have distorted the spelling or meaning of the it.  When reading a word they may think of a synonym, or antonym of the word.  For example, a person with semantic dyslexia may confuse the word "jump" with "jumped".

Dyslexia Without Dysgraphia

Dyslexia without Dysgraphia is a form of dyslexia that may never be diagnosed in some patients because it typically does not affect a persons oral language or writing.  Dyslexia with Dysgraphia is when a person has problems with reading but not with writing.  Some with this form of dyslexia will also have trouble doing math because they have to read numbers which can be confusing.

Dyslexia with Dysgraphia is commonly referred to as "Deep Dyslexia" because it is very severe.  A person with this form of dyslexia may have problems writing letters and words, pronouncing words, and grasping the meaning of some words.  This form of dyslexia can effect all aspects of someone's life, so it is important that someone with this form of dyslexia to receive additional help.

Trauma Dyslexia

This form of dyslexia occurs after a person has had a traumatic injury to trauma to the brain.  Usually, for students who are of school age, this form of dyslexia is not diagnosed because they will receive a note of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).

It is crucial to diagnose dyslexia at an early age.  The sooner it is diagnosed, the sooner it can be treated.  For many school age children, it is best to sit down with the school and create and IEP (individual education program).  An IEP will give the child special care and will help them to cope with their learning disability.

One of the first steps to treating dyslexia are to learn your child's weaknesses.  Some children have trouble reading, while others have problems with speaking, math or writing.  Some children may even have a combination of these challenges.  Once you are aware of their areas of weakness you will know the areas to concentrate on most.  A good place to start treating dyslexia is letters.  Try using flash cards to review letters and sounds with your child.  Then continue by working on phonics.  Another suggestion is to hire a tutor who can work with you child.  There are also many programs or games that your child can play which will help to treat their dyslexia.

Im 14 and I think I may have it. Ive never been able to tell my left from my right, but I always thought that was because Im ampidextrious. Ive never had any problems with reading or math; Im taking geometry and Im in 8th grade. Ive alway had problems pronouncing new words, finishing my thoughts while talking or writing, finding the right words to describe things, and spelling. I have the same problems in Spanish, even though the pronunciation rules are much easier than in English. Im ADHD and blamed most of these problems on that, although the meds for it don't take these problems away, they just help me concentrate. A few tests online said I probably do. Do you think I do?

I'm 23 years old, and I think I might be dyslexic. Thing is, I've always been really good about spelling and reading, so I don't know if anyone will believe me about my suspicions, since spelling and reading problems tend to be the biggest symptoms of dyslexia. Should I still go ahead and get tested?

I have a intelligent 9 year old who was recently diagnosed with dyslexia. He has tested with a high IQ, like most dyslexics so we know this is not a question of intelligence. I think that it is our job as parents to be educated on what works for our child and advocate for them in the classroom. There are incredible resources on the internet. Youtube has some very eye opening videos also.

Is it possible to be dyslexic but to be good at reading, spelling and writing?

I took a test and most of the things I do are like um I confuse left/right, I mispronounce big words, I stutter when I talk too much or with long words, I leave sentences unfinished etc.

So the test said that i might have dyslexia and that perhaps I'm good at reading etc cause I had a good school environment at the time where most dyslexic children fail.

And it's really hard for me to do math. and for me to tell the time with a normal watch but a digital watch is ok for me. so am i dyslexic?

and I change the letters to words like for example the word boggle I'd sometimes change it gobble and like sentences too for instance when I was younger 'Who's gonna dress up me?' was my normal sentence to my parents.

I'm 18 years old my name is Brittany, I've been told that I have dyslexia. Through out my school years and now, I'm a senior I've been asked for help, like having modified work or go to cmc (content mastery) a place where I get help wit my work. But I don't feel like I have that. I'm so self conscious about myself because all of this. I blame this on my parents and everyone who siad I need help. I see students making fun of other students because they get out of class for help. I tell my teachers not to emberase me by asking me if I wanna go to cmc. And they don't. Not only that I don't feel like I need help. I can comprehint my work, I can read, and write, I can give good conversations. Sometimes teachers can make me mad saying ''can you do this on your own.'' that right there jusy blows me awya . It's like they're telling me that I can't do anything in my life with out help. And my mom who always put me down saying I won't make it a interview because she thinks i won't give them good answers. And one day I told her that ima get out of this cmc she said no because you can't do things on your own like other people, your not like your sister. My sister is really smart. And my father who thinks I'm fialing in my classes because I don't get help. Actually I'm making straight a's and b's in my classes.. I swear I'm so ready to ge out of high school and go to college to prove my parents wrong!! I mean I love my parents but they don't see nothing positive of what I'm doing!!

Hi, My boyfriend has dyslexia and i believe it may be dyslexia with dysgraphia. He is 27 now and has never been treated or helped for it. is it possible for him to still get help also would he still be able to apply social security at his age?

Name: Sandra Vasquez Date: Wednesday, Jun 02 2010

my children 16 n 13 have always been considered (other learning disabilities) all through school. I have been trying to get my son diagnosed w/dyslexia since the age of 8, he was "finally" diagnosed last week, he's 13 now. I know my 16 year old also has some form of it as well but the school told me they don't like to give out that diagnosis so she has "dyslexic tendancies". When I was told about my son they added that it didn't matter anyways because there's nothing that can be done for him anyways, it's just a lable he will carry when he gets out of school. I strongly disagree!

Dyslexia is a fascinating disorder. I do think that Dyslexics should be tested and helped with day to day activities, but dyslexics should recognize the extraordinary gift they have. They see the world in an entirely different manner. They are more creative and they don't seem to have the same limiting box thinking non-dyslexics have. My dad is dyslexic, and he is one of the least impaired people I have ever met.

How does a person have a disorder which only applies to written characters on a plain background? Does that person also see trees and houses out of place or pictures of people and objects in disarray? I don't understand how a problem like this only applies to the specifics of language, reading, and character placement/appearance.
